Text Book : Project Management: The Managerial Process, 6-th edition, by Erik Larson and Clifford Gray, McGraw-Hill, 2014 – buy a used textbook or softcover/international edition online – cheaper. Since the tests are open-book-open-note and supervised by ProctorU, you must have a printed copy of the textbook during the tests; you CANNOT USE the e-book.
Textbook Website: http://mhhe.com/larsongray6e
All other course material, quizzes and tests are on Blackboard: learn.kent.edu
Software – We will use the free open software called ProjectLibre - (information will be posted on Blackboard).
ProjectLibre is an open-source Project Management software – similar to MS-Project and it’s free http://www.projectlibre.org It is supposed to be compatible with MS project 2010/2013 with growing users worldwide.
Another option: Microsoft Project 2013 trial version with tutorial is available for free on textbook website. Watch Out, this is a 60-day trial version – after 60 days, you cannot use or reinstall any MS-Project ever again unless you buy the software.
Course Description: This course gives an overview of the concepts, procedures and fundamental processes related to managing projects from initiation through planning, execution and closing. It also introduces the principles, tools and methods used in project management.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the basic principles of project management.
2. Know how to create WBS (Work Breakdown Structure).
3. Know the details of CPM model used in project management scheduling.
4. Know how to schedule with resource constraint and time constraint.
5. Know how to monitor progress and do performance measurement and evaluation
6. Having experience using project management software: ProjectLibre.
Prerequisites: Minimum cumulative 2.500 GPA and junior standing.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES AND COURSE FORMAT:
Because this is an online course, students are expected to read the assigned chapters in the text book and do the quizzes (on Blackboard) for each chapter. I will post lecture videos on Blackboard to explain the more difficult/technical topics such as those in chapters 6 and 8.
Even though this is an online course, I am available in my office during office hours and other times by appointment, and so is Alexis during her office hours. Some difficult materials are better explained face-to-face than by emails. If it is possible, please make an effort to see Alexis or me in person if you need help.
Power point slides, notes and solutions to some of the end-of-chapter questions and problems will be posted on Blackboard. Appendix 1 also contains solutions to selected problems.
Ten Quizzes (open-book open-note) for every chapter are to be taken online (Blackboard) and must be completed on time (see schedule and deadline). There is a 3-hour time limit on these quizzes and you can only take it once.
Project Management – MIS 44152 2 Spring 2015
There will be two open-book open-note online Tests with ProtorU – see schedule.
o You WILL take your exams online (Blackboard) with ProctorU supervision. ProctorU is an online testing service and is required by Kent State University. With ProctorU you can take the exams virtually anywhere and anytime as long as your computer has a webcam and you have a reliable high-speed internet connection. Please watch the following video to understand what to do when you take a test with ProctorU: http://www.proctoru.com/videopops/demovideo.php
o I also have posted two documents on Blackboard explaining what ProctorU is and how to register to take the exams for this course. You must register at least 72 hours in advance (3 days) prior to taking the exam or else you have to pay a fine.
o If you do not have webcam or reliable internet connection, you have the option of taking the exams on paper/pencil outside my office. Please schedule with Alexis or me ahead of time.
There will be one project (using ProjectLibre) due at the end of the semester. Details will be given after you complete chapter 6.
For Spring 2015, the course withdrawal deadline is Sunday March 22, 2015. Withdrawal before the deadline results in a "W" on the official transcript; after the deadline a grade must be calculated and reported.
ProctorU: Proctored exams for 100% Web-based courses
There are two exams in this course. Both exams are proctored via an internet (virtual) proctoring service: ProctorU. You must have a reliable high-speed internet connection, a webcam and a quiet room to take the exams. This video explains what you need to do: http://www.proctoru.com/videopops/demovideo.php
Please check the dates and times when each exam is open. There is a three-hour time limit on both exams. Note that the exams close automatically at the end of the scheduled availability times whether you have completed it or not. So give yourself adequate time to complete it before the due date/time. Again, make sure you have a reliable internet connection before starting your exam; once you start your exam, there is no way to pause it. If your internet times out during the test, you won’t be able to get back to your work.
Students should schedule their exam with ProctorU at least 3 days (72 hours) in advance at: www.proctoru.com/kent or else there will be a fine.
Students who are uncomfortable with ProctorU can opt NOT to enroll in a web-based course, or schedule ahead of time with me or Alexis to take the tests on paper/pencil outside my office.
Students who have concern that their technology will fail or be unreliable should schedule their ProctorU test early in the testing window, so they have time to recover and/or reschedule the test if the technology fails. Please schedule to take your tests at the latest 4 hours before the closing of the test, because it takes time for ProctorU to set up connection with your computer.
Grading Scheme:
10 Quizzes = 10 x 20 points = 200 points
Two Tests = 2 x 40 points = 80 points
One Project = 20 points
Total = 300 points

A. Prerequisite: Students attending the course who do not have the proper prerequisite risk being deregistered from the class.
Enrollment: Students have responsibility to ensure they are properly enrolled in classes. You are advised to review your official class schedule (using Student Tools on FlashLine) during the first two weeks of the semester to ensure you are properly enrolled in this class and section. Should you find an error in your class schedule, you have until Sunday, September 7, 2014 to correct the error. If registration errors are not corrected by this date and you continue to attend and participate in classes for which you are not officially enrolled, you are advised now that you will not receive a grade at the conclusion of the semester for any class in which you are not properly registered.
B. Academic Honesty: Cheating means to misrepresent the source, nature, or other conditions of your academic work (e.g., tests, papers, projects, assignments) so as to get undeserved credit. The use of the intellectual property of others without giving them appropriate credit is a serious academic offense. C. Students with disabilities: University policy 3342-3-18 requires that students with disabilities be provided reasonable accommodations to ensure their equal access to course content. If you have a documented disability and require accommodations, please contact the instructor at the beginning of the semester to make arrangements for necessary classroom adjustments. Please note, you must first verify your eligibility for these through the Student Accessibility Services (contact 330-672-3391 or visit http://www.kent.edu/sas/index.cfm for more information on registration procedures).
